📺 Star Wars: Imperial Assault reviewed by Shut Up & Sit Down — the definitive critical overview of the game

What Is Imperial Assault?

Imperial Assault is a campaign-driven dungeon crawler and tactical skirmish game set in the Star Wars universe immediately following the Battle of Yavin. One player controls the Galactic Empire — deploying troops, springing traps, and controlling the dungeon — while up to four other players control Rebel heroes on cooperative missions.

The game features two completely separate modes of play, each offering a distinct experience. Both modes use the same components but deliver entirely different types of gameplay — making Imperial Assault one of the most versatile Star Wars games ever made.

Two Complete Game Modes

🌌

Campaign Mode

A series of linked missions forming an overarching narrative. Rebel heroes gain experience, unlock new abilities, and acquire equipment between missions. One player controls the Empire against the rest of the group. Perfect for a dedicated game group wanting a long-term campaign.

⚔️

Skirmish Mode

Two players build custom armies from Rebel and Imperial forces and battle for tactical objectives. Fast, competitive, and completely different from the campaign. Great for head-to-head play without a campaign commitment.

How Does the Campaign Play?

Each campaign mission has specific objectives — reach a location, eliminate a target, protect an asset — that must be completed before the Imperial player can stop you. Rebel heroes choose their actions carefully: moving, attacking, resting, or using special abilities from their growing hand of cards.

The Imperial player draws from a Deployment card deck, reinforcing their forces, springing ambushes, and spending Threat tokens on special events. The asymmetry feels authentic — Rebels fight desperately against an overwhelming force, just like in the films.

Between missions, heroes spend experience points to upgrade their abilities and credits to buy equipment. The campaign arc across 15+ missions creates a genuine Star Wars story.
