What Is Wingspan?

Wingspan is an engine-building card game designed by Elizabeth Hargrave and published by Stonemaier Games. You play as a bird enthusiast building the most impressive wildlife sanctuary — attracting, feeding, and breeding birds across three different habitats.

Each of the 170 unique bird cards is based on a real species, complete with scientific facts, stunning artwork, and special abilities. No two games ever feel the same.

The theme is unusual — bird watching doesn't scream "exciting board game" — but that's exactly what makes Wingspan so surprising. It is far more strategic than it looks.

How Does It Play?

Each turn you choose one of four actions: play a bird card, gather food, lay eggs, or draw more cards. Simple enough. But the magic is in the engine you build over four rounds — each bird you place activates abilities that chain into other birds, creating satisfying cascades of actions.

A well-built engine feels genuinely rewarding. When you play the right bird at the right moment and trigger five effects in a row, there's a real sense of accomplishment.

Should You Get the Expansions?

The base game alone has enough content for dozens of plays. But Wingspan's expansions are some of the best in the hobby — each one adds new birds from a different continent and introduces small but meaningful rule additions.

European Expansion adds swift birds and pink powers that trigger on other players' turns. Oceania Expansion overhauled the food system and is considered by many to be the best expansion. Asia Expansion introduced a 2-player duel mode and solo play improvements.
