HeroQuest: Crypt of Perpetual Darkness is not for the faint of heart. Heroes explore in near-total darkness, revealing the dungeon only a few spaces at a time. Every corridor is a threat. Every room is unknown until you step inside.

Originally released as part of the Mythic Tier edition in 2021 and later available as a standalone retail expansion in 2025, Crypt of Perpetual Darkness is widely considered the most challenging expansion in the HeroQuest library — and the most atmospheric.

What Is Crypt of Perpetual Darkness?

Crypt of Perpetual Darkness is an official HeroQuest expansion featuring 10 new quests set in a cursed underground crypt filled with undead enemies, ancient traps, and impenetrable darkness. The expansion was designed in collaboration with Joe Manganiello, known for his deep passion for tabletop gaming and HeroQuest in particular.

The central mechanic is simple in concept but dramatic in effect: heroes cannot see the full dungeon. Visibility is severely limited, meaning rooms and corridors are only revealed as heroes move into them. What lies around the corner is always unknown — and always dangerous.

How Does It Play?

The limited visibility mechanic forces a complete change of strategy. In other HeroQuest expansions, Zargon sets up the dungeon and heroes can often plan their approach based on what they can see. In Crypt of Perpetual Darkness, the darkness is a weapon. Monsters can be hiding just outside your line of sight. Traps are invisible until triggered. The safest-looking corridor can lead straight into an ambush.

The 10 quests are built specifically around this mechanic, escalating in complexity and tension as the campaign progresses. Early quests teach you how to survive in the dark. Later quests assume you've mastered that — and then make it harder.

The undead enemy roster fits the crypt setting perfectly. Ghosts, skeletons, zombies, and more powerful undead creatures populate the darkness, each with behaviors that exploit your limited visibility in different ways. Communication between heroes becomes more critical than in any other expansion.

Crypt of Perpetual Darkness should be the last expansion you play — or close to it. The darkness mechanic assumes a level of HeroQuest experience that only comes from completing multiple earlier expansions. Heroes who have never faced the challenges of Kellar's Keep or Wizards of Morcar will find Crypt of Perpetual Darkness overwhelming.

For groups that have worked their way through the expansion library, however, it represents the ultimate test — and the ultimate reward. Completing Crypt of Perpetual Darkness is a genuine achievement.
