HeroQuest: The Frozen Horror is one of the most distinctive expansions in the modern HeroQuest library. Released by Avalon Hill in 2022, it takes heroes into the frozen northern wastes for a 10-quest campaign built around cold-themed enemies, brutal challenges, and a unique narrative focus on the Barbarian hero.

What makes The Frozen Horror stand out from other HeroQuest expansions is its structure. The first three quests are solo Barbarian missions — designed to equip and prepare the Barbarian before the full party joins. It's a bold design decision that creates a genuinely different opening experience and gives the Barbarian player a moment in the spotlight unlike anything else in the HeroQuest lineup.

Experienced HeroQuest groups consistently describe The Frozen Horror as the expansion that made them feel the cold — the icy enemies, the brutal difficulty, and the solo Barbarian quests create an atmosphere unlike any other expansion.

What's in the Box?

The Frozen Horror delivers one of the most content-rich quest packs in the modern HeroQuest library. The 21 detailed miniatures alone make it worth the price for collectors and painters — and every new enemy type brings a unique mechanical challenge to the quests.

The expansion also introduces Mercenaries — hireable companions available for a single quest. Scouts, Swordsmen, Archers, and Halberdiers can be recruited with in-game gold, adding a strategic resource management layer to the classic HeroQuest experience. Do you spend gold on equipment, or hire a mercenary for a tough quest?

The New Monsters

❄️

The Frozen Horror

The expansion's namesake boss — a towering ice creature with devastating attacks and massive health.

👺

Ice Gremlins

Fast and numerous. Easy to kill individually but overwhelming in packs.

🐻

Polar Warbears

Dual attack each turn. Physically imposing and dangerous at close range.

🦍

Yetis

Crushing grip attack that can disable heroes. Must be prioritized immediately.

How Does It Play?

The Frozen Horror campaign opens with three solo Barbarian quests. The Barbarian player ventures into the frozen north alone — fighting enemies, acquiring cold-weather gear, and building up their character before the rest of the party arrives for quest four. This structure is optional but strongly recommended for the full narrative experience.

Once the full party joins, the remaining seven quests send heroes deeper into the frozen wastes — through arctic dungeons, against increasingly powerful cold-themed enemies, and toward a final confrontation with the Frozen Horror itself.

The mercenary system adds genuine strategic depth. Gold management becomes more meaningful when you're deciding between upgrading your Barbarian's axe or hiring an Archer for extra ranged support. It's a small addition that changes how sessions feel.
