🏆 One of the best-selling children's board games of all time — over 45 years of teaching deductive reasoning to children through play.

Guess Who? is one of the most elegantly designed children's games ever made. Created by Theo and Ora Coster in 1979 and published by Hasbro, it takes a genuinely sophisticated concept — logical deduction through systematic elimination — and packages it into a game a 6-year-old can master in minutes. Every question asked, every face flipped down, every narrowing of possibilities is a genuine act of logical thinking. Children are doing real reasoning, and they don't even know it.

The setup is simple: both players secretly choose a mystery character from their board of 24 faces. Take turns asking yes/no questions about physical features — "Does your person have glasses?" "Do they have red hair?" — and flip down every face that can't match the answer. The first player to correctly guess the other's mystery character wins.

Parents who introduce Guess Who? to children consistently describe the same reaction — within the first game, kids naturally start developing strategies. They learn that asking "Does your person have brown hair?" eliminates more faces at once than asking "Does your person have a hat?" That moment of strategic discovery is what makes Guess Who? genuinely educational.

📺 How to Play Guess Who? — Full Tutorial covering setup, rules, and winning strategies

What Is Guess Who?

Guess Who? is a 2-player deduction game for ages 6 and up. Each player has a game board featuring 24 face-up character tiles — 24 different people with varying hair color, eye color, facial hair, glasses, hats, and other distinguishing features. At the start of each round, both players secretly select one mystery character card and place it in the slot at the front of their board.

Players alternate asking one yes/no question per turn about their opponent's mystery character. Based on the answer, they flip down all the faces that can't possibly match. When a player believes they know the identity of their opponent's character, they can use their turn to make a guess instead of asking a question. Guess correctly — you win. Guess incorrectly — your opponent wins immediately.

Why It Teaches Real Thinking Skills

🧠

Logical Deduction

Children learn to draw conclusions from information — a "yes" answer eliminates all faces without that feature; a "no" eliminates all faces with it.

📊

Efficient Questioning

The best questions eliminate the most faces at once. Children naturally discover that broad questions beat narrow ones — real strategic thinking.

🎯

Risk Management

Guessing too early risks losing immediately. Waiting too long lets opponents catch up. Children learn to read probability and choose the right moment.

💬

Clear Communication

Questions must be precise — "Does your person have short hair?" teaches children to communicate clearly to get useful answers.

Winning Strategy Tips

💡 How to Win at Guess Who?

  • Start with features shared by many characters — hair color, glasses, gender. These eliminate the most faces per question.
  • Count before asking. If 12 of 24 characters have brown hair, asking about hair color is perfectly efficient — it eliminates half the board whatever the answer.
  • Track what your opponent is eliminating — their questions reveal which features their character doesn't have.
  • Never guess until you're down to 2–3 possibilities — the risk of guessing wrong is too high.
  • The Championship Series variant adds a second mystery card per player, dramatically increasing complexity for older players.
