The Five Action Cards

Ark Nova's most innovative mechanic is its action card system. Each player has five action cards — Build, Animals, Association, Cards, and Sponsors. They are placed in slots numbered 1 to 5, and the card in slot 1 is weakest while the card in slot 5 is most powerful.

When you use a card, it moves to slot 1 and all other cards shift up. This means the timing of which card you use matters as much as what you do with it. A powerful Animals action in slot 5 might place multiple animals at once — but once used, it weakens until other cards are played first.

How Does It Play?

On each turn, a player uses one of their five action cards. The strength of the action depends on which slot the card currently occupies. After using it, the card drops to slot 1 and the others shift — creating a natural rhythm that rewards careful sequencing.
