Snake Oil – The Best Pitch-and-Sell Party Game
Combine two random words into a ridiculous product, then sell it on the spot — the funniest 30 seconds your group will spend all night.
How to Play — Watch First
📋 Game Details
Snake Oil takes a wonderfully simple premise — invent a fake product, then sell it like your life depends on it — and turns it into one of the most reliably funny party games on the market. Designed by Jeff Ochs and now published by AMIGO, it has stuck around for over a decade because the format barely ever misses: it's nearly impossible to play a round of Snake Oil that doesn't end in someone reading their pitch and the whole table losing it.
The setup is purple Word cards — nouns and adjectives like "Pirate," "Magical," or "Burp" — that players combine two at a time into an invented product. Then they have about 30 seconds to pitch that product, on the spot, to whichever wacky customer character is up that round. A caveman, a tourist, a rock star — the same product can require a completely different sales pitch depending on who's buying.
Groups who play Snake Oil consistently say the same thing — it's not the products that make people laugh, it's watching a friend commit fully to selling a "Guilt Hammer" to a Viking with a completely straight face.
What Is Snake Oil?
Snake Oil is a creative pitching and improvisation party game for 3 to 10 players. Each player holds a hand of six Word cards. One player draws a Customer card, reads the character aloud, and takes on that role for the round. Everyone else has 30–40 seconds to combine two of their Word cards into an invented product they think that customer would buy.
Players place their two-card inventions face down, then take turns flipping them over and pitching them live to the customer. The customer can cut a pitch off if it drags past 30 seconds, then picks whichever product they'd actually buy. That player wins the Customer card. Once everyone has had a turn being the customer, whoever holds the most Customer cards wins.
What Makes Each Round Work
Word Cards
336 purple cards — combine any two into a product, no rules on what makes sense. The weirder the combo, the better.
The Customer
A new wacky character each round — pirate, dictator, alien — whose preferences completely change what counts as a winning pitch.
The Pitch
30 seconds, live, in front of everyone. No prep beyond combining the cards — the performance is entirely improvised.
Customer Cards
Awarded to the winning pitch each round. Most Customer cards once everyone's had a turn as customer wins the game.
How Does It Play?
The genius of Snake Oil is how little structure it actually needs. There's no scoring math, no strategy to optimize, no rules lawyering — just a fast, repeatable loop of invent, pitch, judge, repeat. A full game with 6 players usually wraps in well under 30 minutes, and a round never drags because the 30-second pitch limit keeps things moving even when someone's on a roll.
The customer role is where the real comedy lives. The same "Snow Globe Vacuum" might bomb with a caveman customer and absolutely win over a tech billionaire — so the skill isn't really inventing clever products, it's reading the room (or the absurd character in front of you) and pitching accordingly on the fly.
Because there's no penalty for a pitch that flops, the game stays low-pressure the entire time. Even players who normally hate "performing" in front of a group tend to loosen up fast, since the whole table is laughing with everyone, not at any one person.

Snake Oil earns its long shelf life the honest way — by being reliably, repeatedly funny with almost no setup or rules to get in the way. It rewards quick thinking and a willingness to commit to a bit, not memorized jokes or strategic optimization, which makes it land differently from card-judging party games like Cards Against Humanity.
