7 Wonders is one of the most celebrated strategy games of the modern era. Designed by Antoine Bauza and winner of the Spiel des Jahres 2011, it achieves something remarkable: a genuine civilization-building experience for up to 7 players, completed in just 30 minutes. No other game in the hobby accomplishes this combination as effectively.

Each player leads one of seven ancient civilizations — Alexandria, Babylon, Ephesus, Giza, Halikarnassos, Olympia, or Rhodes — each with its own Wonder board and unique special powers. Through three rounds of card drafting, players build their civilization, develop military strength, advance their science, and construct the greatest monument in the ancient world.

Players who discover 7 Wonders consistently describe the same revelation — a game that feels like it should take two hours somehow finishes in 30 minutes, yet every player made dozens of meaningful decisions along the way.

What Is 7 Wonders?

7 Wonders is a card drafting civilization game for 2 to 7 players. The game is played over three Ages, each consisting of a hand of cards that players draft simultaneously. On each turn, every player selects one card from their hand, plays it face-down, then passes the remaining hand to their neighbor. All players reveal simultaneously — no waiting, no downtime.

Cards represent structures: resource producers, commercial buildings, military installations, scientific laboratories, civic monuments, and Wonder stages. Building the right combination across three Ages is what determines victory. Points come from multiple sources — military dominance, scientific sets, civic buildings, commercial bonuses, guilds, and Wonder stages — rewarding diverse strategies.

The Seven Wonders

🔭

Alexandria

The Lighthouse and Library — flexible resource production and science bonuses.

🏺

Babylon

The Hanging Gardens — powerful science abilities and extra card plays.

🏛️

Ephesus

The Temple of Artemis — strong coin production for commercial strategies.

🔺

Giza

The Great Pyramid — the most consistent victory point engine in the game.

⚔️

Halikarnassos

The Mausoleum — revives discarded cards for powerful surprise plays.

🕊️

Olympia

The Statue of Zeus — builds one free card per Age and enables trading.

☀️

Rhodes

The Colossus — military powerhouse with strong end-game point generation.

How Does It Play?

The simultaneous drafting is 7 Wonders' defining mechanic — and its greatest achievement. Because every player acts at the same time, there is virtually no downtime regardless of player count. A 7-player game takes the same 30 minutes as a 3-player game.

Each Age you interact primarily with your two neighbors — the players to your left and right. You can trade resources with them, compete militarily against them, and monitor what cards they're taking. Players further around the table matter less directly, but their military strength and science totals affect everyone at end-game scoring.

The scoring system rewards diverse play. Military victories provide points and penalties. Science sets multiply exponentially — collecting sets of the same symbol or all three symbols scores more than their individual values. Civic buildings, guild cards, and Wonder stages all contribute. A winning strategy can emerge from almost any combination of these tracks.
