Dixit won the Spiel des Jahres in 2010 — and it deserved every vote. Designed by Jean-Louis Roubira and published by Libellud, it is one of the most original party games ever created. Built entirely around imagination, empathy, and beautifully illustrated cards, it creates a kind of magic that no other game quite replicates.

The premise is deceptively simple: describe one of your cards with a word, a sentence, a sound, or even a gesture — but make your clue just mysterious enough that not everyone guesses correctly. Too obvious and you score nothing. Too obscure and you score nothing. The sweet spot is everything.

Players who try Dixit for the first time consistently describe the same reaction — surprise that something so simple creates such rich, personal, and often deeply funny conversations about what images mean to different people.

What Is Dixit?

Dixit is a creative storytelling and deduction game for 3 to 6 players. Each player holds a hand of beautifully illustrated cards — dreamlike, surreal images that mean different things to different people. On each turn, one player is the Storyteller.

The Storyteller chooses one of their cards and gives a clue — a word, a phrase, a song lyric, an emotion, anything. All other players then choose their own card that best matches the clue and submit it face down. The cards are shuffled and revealed, and everyone votes for which card they think belongs to the Storyteller. Points are scored based on who guesses correctly — but the Storyteller only scores if some players guess right and some don't.

How Does Each Turn Work?

🗣️

Give a Clue

The Storyteller gives any clue for their card — word, phrase, sound, or gesture.

🃏

Everyone Responds

All other players choose their best matching card and submit it secretly.

🔍

Reveal & Vote

All cards are revealed face up. Everyone votes for which card belongs to the Storyteller.

🏆

Score Points

Storyteller scores only if some — but not all — players guess correctly.

How Does It Play?

The scoring system is the genius of Dixit. If all players guess the Storyteller's card, the Storyteller scores nothing — the clue was too obvious. If nobody guesses it, the Storyteller scores nothing — the clue was too obscure. The Storyteller scores only when the clue lands in the middle: meaningful enough to guide some players, mysterious enough to mislead others.

This means every clue is a calibration exercise. You have to think like your friends — know what connections they'll make, what images resonate with them, what will lead them just close enough but not all the way there. It's a game about knowing your group as much as it's a game about the cards.

The artwork does the rest. Every card in Dixit is a miniature painting — dreamlike, ambiguous, emotionally rich. They invite interpretation in a way that functional game art never does. The cards are genuinely beautiful objects.
