What Is Coup?

In Coup, each player starts with two face-down character cards and two coins. On your turn, you take an action — and here's the twist: you can claim to be any character, even one you don't have. The Duke lets you take three coins. The Assassin eliminates an opponent's influence for three coins. The Captain steals coins from another player. The Ambassador lets you swap your cards. The Contessa blocks assassination attempts.

Any player can challenge any action at any time. If they're right and you were bluffing, you lose an influence card. If they're wrong, they lose one instead. Lose both your influence cards and you're eliminated. Last player standing wins.

That's the entire game. And it's brilliant.

How Does Coup Play?

Every session of Coup is a psychological battle. The early game is about accumulating coins — you need seven to launch a Coup against another player, forcing them to lose an influence with no way to block it. Get to ten coins and you must launch a Coup. This creates constant pressure on every player to act before being eliminated.
